Meadowsweet has several significant uses in equines including those suffering from rheumatic pain, inflammation and those suffering ulcers/digestive problems caused by wormers and other veterinary medications.

Horses who have had a significant worm burden can often get ulcers and other digestive issues from the worm's behaviour in the stomach and guts. The burrowing behaviour of worms, hatching from eggs and migrating all cause irritation and sometimes significant bleeding, ulceration, colic and even death of the horse. The use of wormers may kill the burden yet the irritation and pain can increase as the worms die off.

Other veterinary medications such as bute for example can cause ulcers in equines, especially if used for a long period of time. Horses with long-standing health conditions being medicated often get ‘dragged down’ by the use of the drug as it irritates the digestive system. Meadowsweet helps by reducing excess stomach acid and protecting the gut helping the horse feel comfortable.

Due to the salicylate in meadowsweet (like white willow bark, which also contains this acid) Meadowsweet helps to reduce inflammation in the horse. It can be used for a wide variety of conditions, including keeping elderly horses comfortable or horses with strains, sprains and competition horses.
